It was an honour to attend the official opening of the R2D2 road in Ireland’s Most Northerly Pub, Farren’s Bar at Malin Head earlier today in advance of the inaugural ‘May The Fourth Be With You’ festival next month, (3rd – 5th May).

New signage was unveiled on what was previously the R242 at Malin Head, the filming location of the recent ‘Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi’. The quirky initiative is credit to the hard-working team at Go Visit Inishowen along with our local councillors and Minister Joe McHugh who see the huge tourism significance in the link.

Star Wars

Banba’s Crown in Malin Head has always been a bucket lister as it’s Ireland’s most northerly point but it now has an added appeal for Star Wars fans who want to walk in the footsteps of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

Malin Head is included on my Inishowen tour with photo opportunities at the new R2D2 road signs. But for hardcore fans, a walking tour with Bren Whelan of Donegal Climbing is a must. Bren’s first-hand tales from helping Lucas Film choose Malin Head to working on set during filming are as close to being there yourself as you’ll get! Malin Head Community Centre is also a hub of local knowledge about the filming – Ali Farren is the man with all the info 😉
