An amazing guide for an amazing county!
We spent four days with Henry Doohan and we cannot say enough good things about him. My husband’s family is from Donegal and he wanted to see as much of the county as possible and Henry made that possible. Henry listened to us and made our tour a very personal experience. We saw the beautiful sites of Donegal, of course, but we also saw the various small towns where my husband’s mother and grandmother lived and worked before WWII. I expressed a very vague interest in stone circles and Henry took us to the Beltany circle near Raphoe which captured the essence of Donegal for me – the ancient and unknowable Celtic traditions together with the beauty of the natural landscape and agricultural footprint that has been imposed on it over the generations, both good and bad. I will long savour the memories of the beautiful pink wild foxglove (I think) growing along the path to the stone circle.
What stands out most about Henry is how kind and thoughtful he is. He felt my husband’s trepidation about driving with a standard transmission car in a country that drives on the left-hand side of the road (unlike home). He helped him to feel more comfortable about that but, most importantly, he waited in the car rental agency while my husband finished the paperwork and then allowed us to follow him out of Letterkenny to our rental cottage, all after our tour was long finished.
In short, Henry is a treasure for County Donegal and for those are lucky enough to use his services. It was an unusual expense for us but there is no question but that it was money well spent. If you want to “feel” Donegal and its people, contact Henry.
